Mark Benard brings a rare blend of high-tech wizardry and boots-in-the-dirt practicality to Camp Denman. With a 31-year career in the visual effects industry, Mark’s journey includes a highly decorated decade at the helm of his award-winning VFX house, Lost Boys Studios. Under his leadership, the studio delivered high-end visual effects across hundreds of feature films, television series, game cinematics, and commercial productions — earning numerous accolades, including Leo Awards for Best Visual Effects and a Primetime Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Special Visual Effects for the hit series Stargate SG-1. He also served for several years as the Education and Technology Chair for the Vancouver chapter of the Visual Effects Society.

Building on his studio’s success, he founded and directed the internationally acclaimed Lost Boys | School of VFX. Over its 21-year history, he built the academy into what Variety and The Hollywood Reporter hailed as one of the top training grounds in the world. As Managing Director, Mark designed the curriculum, mentored students, managed complex technical pipelines, and spearheaded marketing — and personally designed, built, and filmed hundreds of cinematic shots to simulate real-world production, from set building and costume creation to lighting, cinematography, and directing performance. After launching the careers of over 600 digital artists into top-tier Hollywood studios (with a 98% placement rate), Mark exited his business and brought his passion for creative technology to Denman Island.

Growing up just across the water in the Comox Valley, Mark has always considered this region home. Stepping onto the Camp Denman grounds is a literal homecoming: his very first away-from-home camp experience took place right here when the site was known as Elkhaven. A fiercely imaginative youth and dedicated Lego maniac, his obsession with computer graphics began by relentlessly tinkering with the single Commodore 64 at his elementary school. Years in the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, and youth cadet programs forged his lifelong foundation in mentoring, teamwork, and wilderness adventure.

Today, Mark is deeply woven into the local island community. When he isn’t designing digital workflows, he serves on the Board of Directors for both the Denman Island Museum and the Summer Art Gallery. He holds a Permaculture Design Certification from OUR EcoVillage, has served as a permaculture teaching assistant, and has spent years working at the Lake Farm Market Garden and helping out at Two Roads Farm.

A proud father of two creative kids, Mark’s mission at Camp Denman is simple: to inspire the next generation to craft jaw-dropping visual stories using cutting-edge tools, all while staying deeply connected to the natural world around them.

    Eli Hason, Audio Director

    Audio Director

    Eli Hason

An audio nerd since childhood and a sound designer for games and film, known globally as DJ Eliazar. He records musicians and voice artists at his Denman Island studio, with work for Disney and Netflix.

Eli Hason is an audio nerd. Some of his earliest memories are of recording sounds off the radio onto cassette tapes, and learning editing with the double cassette deck on a boom box. His life has been full of recording, creating, and sharing a filter of sound — through field recording trips around the world, getting folks dancing through DJ sets, creating new galaxies of sound in video games, and setting off into dreamland with electronic compositions.

Eli grew up in Chicago during a moment when it was an amazing music incubator, with industrial, indie rock, punk, and house music scenes all intermingling as they grew and spread. His high school had a radio station and he started DJing at the age of 14, doing radio shows that played wide varieties of music and playing in punk bands. In college he joined a Gamelan Orchestra and learned to make electronic music with drum machines, a sampler, and turntables. Moving overseas in the late 90s got him focused on field recording, as well as DJing in exotic locales across Asia, including 18 months living and playing music in Japan.

Upon returning to North America he went back to school for sound design and electronic music composition in Vancouver, landing a job doing sound design in games within a month of graduation. He has produced and released electronic music under a variety of aliases, but is most widely known as DJ Eliazar, helping push the Electro Swing and Vintage Remix sound around the globe with his Speakeasy Electro Swing events and record label. More recent endeavours include underground events and silent discos around the Gulf Islands, and co-developing the Cross-Pollination Festival and the Blackberry Jam music festival.

Eli has been working as a sound designer in games since 2007, on projects with studios including Double Helix, Shiny, Behaviour, Eidos Montreal, Midwinter, Big Red Button Games, and Ever Curious. He records musicians and voice artists at his studio on Denman Island, including voice-over work for shows on Disney and Netflix, and has taught youth about music production in Vancouver, Vancouver Island, and Portland. As Audio Director for Ever Curious Entertainment, he continues to help put on musical events at the Denman Island community hall, make music with friends, and enjoy time in nature foraging and wild swimming.

“Being a creature of innovation, positivity, and a yearn to learn helps me to feel as though life keeps getting better and more enjoyable the older I get.”
